About the Mentoring Progam

Mentoring is a two-way professional relationship where an experienced person (the mentor) guides, supports, and encourages the mentee to manage their learning, maximise their potential, develop their skills, and improve their performance to advance their careers.

It is a voluntary relationship where both parties negotiate and agree on the terms. Mentoring provides the basis for a trusted, confidential relationship where personal and professional challenges, successes, and goals can be discussed.

The DAMA Australia Mentoring Program supports development through both one-to-one mentoring relationships and group mentoring opportunities. While many participants are matched with an individual mentor, the program also includes Group Loop Mentoring, where experienced professionals facilitate discussions with small groups of mentees. This approach enables shared learning, broader perspectives and valuable peer connections across the data community.

DAMA Australia is uniquely positioned to offer mentoring in data management. Our membership includes a wide range of data management professionals across Australia whose expertise spans all major data management disciplines.

How the Program Works

A structured 6-month journey with flexibility for your schedule

Expression of Interest

Complete the expression of interest form to identify yourself as a one to one mentor or mentee. Share your expertise areas or learning goals to help enable the best matches.

To run a group loop submit your expression of interest by emailing Mentoring@DAMA.org.au.

Matching Process

Mentors and mentees are carefully matched based on expertise, goals, location preferences, and availability to ensure a productive relationship.

Kick-Off Meeting

Attend the program launch where we provide guidelines, answer questions, and help you establish expectations with your mentor or mentee and group loop.

Regular Meetings (6 Months)

Work together on your own schedule. Most pairs meet at least monthly, choosing their preferred method (in-person, video call, phone) and topics based on the mentee's goals.

Mid-Program Check-In

Halfway through, we check in to ensure the relationship is productive and address any questions or challenges.

Program Conclusion

At the end of six months we close out the program, celebrate successes, and gather feedback for future improvements.

Keys to a Successful Relationship

Best practices for productive mentoring partnerships

Set Clear Expectations

Agree on meeting frequency, contact preferences, and objectives at the start. Revisit these regularly to ensure alignment and progress.

Meet Regularly

Typically, mentors and mentees meet at least once a month. Consistency builds momentum and strengthens the relationship.

Communicate Openly

Regular check-ins on how the mentoring is progressing help ensure the relationship remains constructive and meets its goals.

Maintain Confidentiality

Everything discussed between mentor and mentee is confidential and should not be shared without explicit permission.

Protect Privacy

Keep personal information (phone numbers, addresses, etc.) secure and respect each other's privacy boundaries.

Mutual Respect

Both parties commit to respect, professionalism, and creating a supportive environment for growth and learning.
